Dogs grow a heavier, insulating undercoat through the cooler months to keep warm. Once the days start getting longer and warmer, that undercoat has done its job and needs to go. This seasonal "coat blow" is completely natural, but it can be intense, especially for double-coated breeds that carry a thick winter layer.
Left to its own devices, all that loose undercoat doesn't just fall out cleanly. It gets trapped against the skin, tangles with the topcoat and can lead to matting, overheating and skin irritation right when the weather is warming up and your dog wants to be comfortable outside.
Brushing at home helps, but it can't reach the dense undercoat the way a professional de-shed treatment can. Regular brushing plus a seasonal de-shed is the best combination.
